The purpose of seed certification is to maintain high quality seeds and propagating materials or varieties and make them available to the public. These products are grown and distributed in order to maintain high quality, genetic purity and identity.
The Missouri Crop Improvement Association accomplishes this in a variety of ways. They include:
- Cooperating with the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, the University of Missouri Extension Service, the Missouri Department of Agriculture and private plant breeders in the introduction and maintenance of superior strains and varieties of farm crops and in the continuous campaign for the use of standard improved varieties of farm crops within the state.
- Developing, adopting and maintaining standards of excellence for the various classes of seed grown by members under the rules and regulations of the Association.
- Providing an inspection service for members growing seed crops.
- Regulating certification of inspected seeds.
- Providing and requiring the use of uniform and distinguishing marks, tags, bags or emblems for use on all classes of seed officially sponsored by the Association.
- Collecting and distributing information on seeds; by conducting demonstrations and exhibits; by providing information and promoting activities of the Association.
- Aiding the members of the Association in promoting the agricultural interests of Missouri in any way consistent with the provisions under which the Association is incorporated.
- Cooperating with the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies.
